Drawings of persons

I find my fellowcreatures fascinating. In this category you will find figure, people and body drawings: nudes done in pencil, anatomy sketches, models drawn on short poses and sketches of hands. These are mainly black and white pencil, brush, pen and fountain pen sketches.

Life sketches of people

Public places abound with interesting, strange or fascinating people. They doesn’t know that I’m sketching them, or they do not let themselves be disturbed. The result has something casual. I slip for a moment into a very personal world that is not mine. The drawings are created in sketchbooks or on loose sheets.

“Dear Anna, I took a look at your website and… I admit that I have immersed myself in it… In your beautiful language, your view of the world and the delicate threads that are much more than lines and colours in the intertwining of humour, meaning and medium.”

Portraits

For me, drawing a person’s face is like celebrating their uniqueness. A gentle caress at a distance. The extent to which a person will be recognisable on paper remains unpredictable: the miracle will happen or not. However, almost systematically one finds in the portrait something of the inner life of the model. And this is not related to photographic accuracy but rather to the transcription of an indefinable essence.

Body sketches

Here the models take the pose that I require. What interests me is studying the effect of a certain posture. Or maybe I’m developing a comic book character. Model drawing requires complete concentration. Time stops. Artist, model and drawing are one.

“Good morning, I landed on this website. Fascinating and compliments. The drawings convey somehow a balancing act between lightness and melancholy, life affirmation and caution. Best wishes from Zürich”

Pencil nudes

Drawing nude postures is the precursor to other types of illustrations that depict characters. Often these pencil sketches are even more interesting to me than the resulting “cleanly drawn” figures. Lines between different points of the body help me to find the volume and proportions.

Hands sketches

One hand knocks on the door, prepares the coffee, raises a cup, scratches the head, gives a hug, reaches itself into another hand. A hand draws itself while drawing. If our eye spots the anatomy errors in a hands drawing, it is because we constantly see hands. We know them. Understanding bone structure is useful. It determines the limited number of positions a hand can take – from unlimited perspectives. A happiness or a nightmare for designers and for illustrators, accordingly!

Travel drawings

For me, public places, full or empty, are inhabited. The sometimes undesirable crowded environment is often neutralised by emotional distance. There, we do learn a lot about each other… People’s appearance and behaviour are a wonderful playground for artists – and sketching is more discreet than photography.
